Ultra Electronics Electrics Division and MilCAN

Introduction

Ultra Electronics Electrics Division (UEED) produce a range of CANbus enabled sub-systems for Fighting Vehicle applications including control handles, battery monitoring sensors, bus gateways, control panels, video switching and power management.

UEED is a founder member of the MilCAN group and has developed products implementing the MilCAN protocol as part of several MoD procurement programmes, including the General Dynamics UK Platform Battlefield Information System Application (P-BISA) program and the BAE SYSTEMS Terrier Combat Engineering Tractor. Details of the sub-systems using MilCAN are given below.

General Dynamics UK P-BISA Programme

UEED have developed a Commander’s Pointing Device (CPD) and a MilCAN to USB Node (MUN) for the P-BISA programme, these units are installed on British Army Challenger2, Warrior and CVR(T) vehicles.

The Commander’s Pointing Device provides the Commander with BMS on-the-move waypoint marking and object drawing functions required to efficiently and effectively fight the vehicle.

The MUN performs a gateway function between the vehicle MilCAN bus and the USB port of the Commanders Processor. As the MilCAN bus master, it is the primary node through which vehicle data is distributed by the BOWMAN system, and provides a MilCAN compliant connection to support future system upgrades.

BAE SYSTEMS Terrier Combat Engineering Tractor

UEED have developed Crew Ancillary Controllers for the Terrier Combat Engineering Tractor, these consist of Crew Control Handles, a Commander’s Control Panel and a Driver’s Gear Range Selector. The units communicate via dual-redundant MilCAN buses.

Other UEED Products

UEED also produce other CAN enabled products that support all commonly used higher level protocols, including MilCAN. These include:

  • Video Switching and Power Unit (VSPU). Developed for the British Army Engineer Tank System (ETS) offering 12 by 12 video switching capability controlled via CAN.

  • Power Management. Solutions incorporate CAN interfaces to facilitate remote power switching and load state reporting (current drawn, open circuit, short circuit etc)

  • Battery Monitoring Sensors. Sensors determine the state of charge and health of lead acid batteries, via impedance measurement, to aid power management. A battery monitoring system incorporating these sensors is interfaced to a MilCAN bus on a British Army Warrior as part of the High Availability and Sustainability Program (HASP)
